Before I know what’s going on, we are sat in the Slug and Lettuce and there’s a pint of ale and a massive plate of breakfast in front of us both, courtesy of Liz, the barmaid. I ordered coffee, but Molly ‘upgraded’ us to beer as well. ‘Hair of the Dog’ she called it.

“I shouldn’t be eating this much.” I nod down at my plate. Bacon, fried eggs, sausages, beans, black pudding and two rounds of toast, lashed with butter.

“Do you good.” Molly smiles. Her plate equally full.

“Not good for my waistline.” I pat my tummy.

“You’re grand. A fella should have a bit of meat on him. I don’t like those stick boys you see around with the tight pants on. What the feck is going on with them, like? They’d blow away in a gust of wind.” Molly shoots me a flirtatious look and I feel my cheeks burn.

“Well, thank you. I definitely won’t blow away. But I really shouldn’t be drinking again. Not after last night.”

“We’re only having the one, like.”

“One… Sure.” I smile at Molly, and she winks back.
